Farm History

Charles Gilbert GANNETT was born on 16 Aug 1831 in SPRINGVILLE, Wayne, NY. Charles Gilbert died in Pittsford, Hillsdale, MI, on 16 Jun 1903; he was 71.

Obituary: Charles G. Gannett was born in Wayne county, NY, August 16, 1831, and died at his home in Wheatland, June 16, 1903.  He was the only son of Alva and Lydia G. Gannett.  At the age of 15 he moved with his mother and only sister to Wheatland, Michigan his father having died when he was but five years old.  He cleared the land and built his home, where it now stands at which place he lived forty-three years.  He was married to Sarah L. Livermore, February, 1858, who with one daughter and two grandchildren remain to mourn their loss.  “A loved one has gone from the shores of time to those of eternity.”

Card of thanks:  “We wish to express our sincere thanks, to the friends and neighbors, who so kindly helped during the sickness and burial of our dear husband and father.”  Mrs. S.L. Gannett, Mr. And Mrs. C.H. Bradley

The following history of the farm comes from a hand written history I found in a book.  It was written by Edna Mae Bradley Gregory:

“After clearing part of the original 160 acres he returned to New York state where he died.  (It isn’t clear to me if he built the house at that point before returning to New York or not.)  His wife, Lydia Gilbert Gannett, and her two children, Charles Gilbert Gannet (age 17) and Mary (age 15) came in 1848 to live on the farm.  After the remarriage of Lydia the farm was then divided between Charles and Mary. Now we should probably consider Charles G. Gannett’s arrival in the very young State of Michigan. Charles was the

eldest of two children. He had a sister, Mary, two years younger than he. They were born and grew to young manhood and womanhood in the vicinity of Springville, New York. Since he

never told grandmother much about those years I can’t relate to you anything of his childhood.
